Crafting and scrapbooking go digital

OREM, UT

The digital age has come calling at the door of one of the most traditional American pastimes...crafting. Provo Craft and internet upstart pcCrafter, Inc. have combined to create a new product they say will take the crafting and scrapbooking communities by storm...PC HugWare.

"Although the concepts behind HugWare are not new, the application of those concepts are" said co-owner of pcCrafter, Inc. Randy Benson. "We are taking traditionally non-technical crafts and helping people create them using their personal computers."

HugWare begins with a clipart browser. Computer users can browse through art from their favorite HugWare artists, then ‘drag and drop' it into any program that accepts clipart. Compositions can be created on the computer or art can be printed for use in craft projects.

Benson pointed out that using computers for clipart is not a new concept. Other companies have created clipart and scrapbook enhancement programs in the past. However, Benson said that PC HugWare takes the good ideas of the past and then "takes it to the next level."

"We will be introducing complete project kits, specialty papers, project books and computer crafting programs to help spark creativity with HugWare" said Benson. "We want HugWare to be the answer to every crafting dillema. HugWare is not just a product, it's an experience."

According to Benson, HugWare enables people to design, create and share their projects in ways never before available.

"I actually had a HugWare party for my daughters," said Benson. "We made the invitations, decorations, party favors (earrings, jewelry boxes and paper dolls), stickers for the paper cups and plates, napkins and personalized place mats. At the party we took the kids pictures and let them do a project or scrapbook page."

Benson continued, "This was one of the best parties my kids ever had. All of their friends now want a party made with HugWare. Using HugWare saved us a lot of time and money. We didn't have to run all over town finding the right party theme, we created whatever (our daughter) wanted by using our computer and HugWare."

Benson said that a theme party like this is only one of thousands of ideas that HugWare can be useful for. "Most people don't know that their computer is a very powerful crafting tool."

"We are currently working on several projects to expand the ability of HugWare users to communicate and share ideas and projects with one another," said Benson.

Will HugWare replace conventional crafting and scrapbooking? "Absolutely not," says Benson. "Scrapbooking and craft-making are arts. HugWare simply gives us more tools and more creative options."

PC HugWare can be ordered through www.pccrafter.com. It will be available on store shelves September, 2000.
